Facing the Elements

The trap looks more like a doggie cage
than a device for capturing wild animals.
Yet we got us a raccoon, not bad for a first try.

To explain, we're no bounty hunters.
But he'd burrowed under the house,

Enough about flowers and sun
or the robins that sing tra-la
Let’s hear it instead for pickles,
the ones that reek with garlic
to make the Reuben come out just right.

This Holy Place

The thrust of a leaf through the brown-crusted grass,
a shudder of wind through a sheer mountain pass,
coyotes that howl as the moon skirts the trees,
sharp memories of laurel or pink peonies,
the patter of raindrops on broad fields of corn,
